The SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome 2 virus) is a betacoronavirus that was first isolated in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019.
   
The virus has a genome of 29.8 kbp and codes the information for membrane, envelope, nucleocapsid and the spike glycoprotein.
   
The spike proteins are cleaved by the serine protease TMPRSS2 and then bind to ACE2 or CD147 to reach the host cell.
   
The receptor binding site of the spike protein binds more strongly to the ACE2 receptor than the similar spike protein of the SARS virus isolated in 2003.
   
The SARS-CoV-2 virus infects the respiratory and lung epithelium, gastrointestinal tract, olfactory neurons, brain, spinal cord, and possibly other organs.
   
The main symptoms are a cough, fever, and respiratory problems. Other common symptoms are gastrointestinal problems, fatigue and neurological symptoms.
   
Severe symptoms occur more frequently in patients of advanced age and in patients with e.g. diabetes or pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
   
The virus has an incubation period of 2 11 days. Severe symptoms include damage to the lungs, the development of microthrombosis in the lungs, heart and brain, and inflammatory processes also known as cytokine storm.
   
During this, the body is flooded with cytokines (incl. increased IL-6, IL-8 and TNFa) and immune cells (in particular CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and CD68+ and CD163+ macrophages).
